Tamil Nadu, the southern most state of India, has Chennai as its capital. The Tamil Nadu Governor or the Constitutional head of the state executes certain functions in the state. He takes care of his assigned duties for better running of the state. Shri Surjit Singh Barnala is the present Governor of Tamil Nadu.
The Tamil Nadu Governor Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, was born on 21st October in 1925. His father passed away when he was only at the age of nine. Barnala had to strive himself to acquire education. Once he passed matriculation examination, he moved to Lucknow for higher studies. Barnala passed Law in 1946 from the Lucknow University.
While his stay in Lucknow, Barnala participated in the Quit India Movement and was later arrested. In the year 1967, he was elected the MLA and he remained in the same Barnala Assembly Constituency till 1999. After this his political career rose steadily. In 1969 he became the Education Minister of Punjab. In the later years, he was selected as an MP during the tenure of Morarji Desai.
The Tamil Nadu Governor having a prosperous political career went through certain hardships as well. He was also selected the President of Akali Dal. Under Barnala, Akali Dal won the Assembly Elections and he became the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1985.
In 1990, Barnala was selected the Governor of Tamil Nadu. But he resigned the following year. In 2004, he was again selected the Governor of Tamil Nadu for a second time. He also remained as the Governor of Uttaranchal and Andhra Pradesh at some point of time.
Throughout his career Barnala stood steadfast against terrorism when others had to surrender to it. He is a nature lover and loves to travel. He has represented India in FAO, SAARC and the United Nations. He is a man of aesthetics as well. He painted a number of paintings and has also written a book.
