Tamil Nadu High Court is located in Chennai, the capital city of the state. This court was established on 26th of June, in the year 1862. The Tamil Nadu High Court has 40 justices who work in civil and criminal cases. The court is headed by Chief Justice Thiru Justice Ajit Prakash Shah. The Madurai Bench of the court is functioning since 2004.
The Tamil Nadu High Court is one of the three courts that were designated Supreme Court for their respective Presidencies, prior to the Indian High Courts Act. The other two courts being the Bombay and the Calcutta High Courts.
Although lately, in the year 1996, the name of the city has been changed from Madras to Chennai but the name of the Tamil Nadu High Court remains has not been altered.
It is believed that the Madras High Court has the second largest judicial complex in the world. The building has been designed by the famous architect Henry Irwin. The architecture of the Tamil Nadu High Court is an excellent example of the Indo- Saracenic style. This exquisite building was constructed in 1892, much after the establishment of the court. This building was damaged in 1914 during the First World War in an attack by the German force.
