Tamil Nadu has a distinguished panchayats system of administration. It is the Local Self Government in the rural areas. This empowers the government with administrative powers in the grass root level. Tamil Nadu has a well developed panchayat system and is also the first in promoting town panchayats in the country.
Thiru M.K. Stalin is the minister for rural development and local administration in Tamil Nadu presently. The ministry has incorporated various programs in promoting the panchayats and the panchayat unions. The ministry aims at eradicating the indebtedness in the rural areas and works for the alleviation of poverty in these areas. The panchayats are dedicated to the cause of the ministry and work to ensure better living facilities for the rural people.
Tamil Nadu is also the propounder of the town panchayat which is an intermediary local government between the rural and the urban administration. The administration of the town panchayat was initially under the department of rural development. It now falls under the administrative powers of the municipalities of Tamil Nadu. The 16 zones are divided into 561 town panchayats in Tamil Nadu. The town panchayats have functions that cater to the needs of the townsfolk. Having developed near the tourist spots, the functionality of the town panchayat has led to the promotion of tourism in Tamil Nadu.
The panchayats in the villages and the towns of Tamil Nadu work for the promotion of the backward regions of the state. The efficient working of the panchayats in Tamil Nadu has facilitated the town and rural people of the state to a large extent.
