Tamil Nadu Police, the police force of Tamil Nadu is headed by the Director General of Police. This extremely efficient wing of the state Home Department of Government of Tamil Nadu. This the fifth largest state police force in India and is 140 years old. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu who holds the portfolio of Home Minister has the power of administrative control over Tamil Nadu Police.

Tamil Nadu Police is divided into four police zones, namely- North Zone, Central Zone, West zone and South Zone. Each zone is headed by an Inspector General of Police. There are also six city police forces to take care of the important cities of Tamil Nadu. City police force is present in Chennai, Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Tiruchirapalli. The city police is headed by a Commissioner of police. There are 30 police districts in Tamil Nadu. Each district is headed by a Superintendent of Police. One Deputy Inspector General is appointed to supervise a work of 2 or 3 districts, these constitute the Police Range. There are eleven such Ranges under Tamil Nadu Police.

The Tamil Nadu Police also has many special units for providing some support services. Specific functions related to security, criminal investigation and intelligence are performed by these units of the Tamil Nadu Police. These units are-
