The Zila Parishad is a Local Government. In Tamil Nadu there are Zila Parishads that look after needs and problems of their respective areas. All the Zila Parishads are known by the name of the district concerned. The Zila Parishads must consist of representative members, nominated members, women members and official members. Every Zila Parishad must have a Chairman and a Vice Chairman. Many Zila Parishads appoint committees when necessary to assist in their functions. Generally they determine the number of members, duties and procedure of such committees. The Deputy Commissioner of the Zila and other Government Officials working in the different Zilas of Tamil Nadu are also the member of that particular Zila Parishad.
Some of the Zila Parishads have executive and administrative powers, where as the others purely advisory and coordinating function. Some Zila Parishads are also empowered to levy taxes and fees. All the Zila Parishads have common seal and power to acquire and hold both movable and immovable property. The Zila Parishads may develop, inspect, manage, maintain or improve any property that is owned by it or placed under its control. This facilitate all the Zila Parishads of Tamil Nadu to feel free in deciding things related to the development of a particular area.
The Zila Parishads in Tamil Nadu together work in order to help in proper functioning of the state.
