Chief Minister

M.Karunanidhi is the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. He is a man of exceptional talents: a great orator, playwriter, editor, publisher, writer, a Member of Parliament, avid poet and also a statesman. He was born on 3rd June 1924, in village called Thirukuvalai, in the district of Tanjore.

M.Karunanidhi entered politics at the age of 14, by participating in cultural and social movements. He was the founder of the Dravidan Movement known as "Tamil Nadu Tamil Manavar Mandram". He was one of the members who contributed in the establishment of the political party DMK in 1949. From the year 1961 to 1969, he was the treasurer of the party and has later served as the President.

M.Karunanidhi has worked for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu for more than 40 years, as a member of Legislative Assembly or Council. He successfully won all the Assembly Elections from 1957 to 2006, that he contested. From 1967 to 1969, he was the Cabinet Minister, and held the portfolio of Minister for Public works. He held the post of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1969-71, 1971-76, 1989-91 and 1996-2001.

Apart from being a social activist M.Karunanidhi was a very talented artist of the stage. He wrote 70 screenplays including Rajakumari, Abhimanyu, Mandiri Kumari, Marutha Naattu Ilavarasi, Manamagan, Devaki, Parasakthi, Panam, Poompuhar, Poomalai, Mani Makudam, Marakka Mudiyuma? Avan Pithana? Pookkari etc. M.Karunanidhi represented the Tamil Nadu Assembly from Kulithalai (1957-62), Thanjavur (1962-67), Saidapet (1967-71), Saidapet (1971-76), Anna Nagar (1977-80), Anna Nagar (1980-83), Harbour (1989-91), Harbour (1991) (Resigned), Chepauk (1996-2001), Chepauk (2001-2006). People of Tamil Nadu affectionately call him as, 'Kalaignar'. He was felicitated with many awards and recognitions. Annamalai University honoured him with a "Doctorate" in 1971 and 'Tamizh vel " by the Council of Doctor of Philosophy. For his book "Thenpandi Singam" he received " Raja Rajan Award".
