Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary is a hallmark of the lush pristine beauty that prevails in Tamil Nadu. The state encompasses an area of 1,30,058 sq. km out of which 17.6% is covered by forests that spread across the sprawling acres of low-lying plains and lofty hills.
The state is also renowned for its abundant flora that comprise of an assortment of medicinal herbs, cinchona plants, rubber and sandalwood plantations, Palmyra trees and the legendary kurinji flower.
Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary occupies an area of 223 sq. km and is situated in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli District and also includes the jungle-clad foothills of the Western Ghats and its adjacent areas. A rich and varied flora ranging from tropical wet and evergreen foliage to tropical dry deciduous vegetation made up of thorny scrubs marks the sanctuary’s natural vegetation.
The picturesque sanctuary dotted with sylvan water bodies gleaming like a jewel in a brass setting is a sight to behold. Nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts have the opportunity to explore the open countryside with prior permission from the state’s wildlife department.
