Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary


Point Calimere Bird Sanctuary is a zone of idyllic bliss with its lush greenery sprinkled with sparkling water bodies. The sanctuary exudes an aura of tranquility and the quietude is occasionally disturbed by the welcome melodious twitters of sandpipers.

Point Calimere Bird Sanctuary is strategically located in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district, a mere 42 km from Thiruthuraipoondi Railway station and 225 km from Tiruchirapalli Airport. The sanctuary is connected through a well-developed road network.

Point Calimere Bird Sanctuary spans across a rambling acres of nearly 17.26 sq. km and is the perfect combination of the sun, sea and sand. Dense forests and tidal swamps complete the picturesque scenery. Tourists can catch a glimpse of several rare varieties of animals like Chital, Wild boar, Bonnet macaque, Black Buck, Flamingoes, Teals, Gulls, Terns, Palavers and Stilts as they come to the waterfront to quench their thirst.

The winter months witness the steady influx of Teals, Curlews, Gulls, Terns, Plovers, Sandpipers, Shanks, and Herons and uncountable Flamingoes. With the commencement of spring, a whiff of freshness overwhelms the sanctuary and Koels, Mynas and Barbets cheerfully hum a merry tune as they bite into the raw sweetness of wild berries.
