Handloom weaving is considered to be the largest industry in the northeastern state. Almost all the tribal households of Tripura are involved in this industry. The local handicrafts of Tripura are a rage with people throughout the country. The Tripura Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation Ltd has come up with several novel schemes to market the products. The quality conscious government has also set up the All India Handicraft Board in the state's capital city, Agartala. This unit doses extensive research on the quality of the products. In fact, nearly 5000 people are employed in the state's handicraft sector and work skillfully to build exquisite bamboo and cane products.
Silk industry and sericulture used to be another core sector of the state's economy. However, today the flourishing industry has dwindled to a solitary village in Agartala. Currently, 500 hectares of land are reserved for mulberry cultivation and the estimated production is said to be 5000 kg per year. A jute mill has also been established at Agartala whose production capacity is 20 tonnes of jute products per day with a net workforce of 2000 people.
The latent hydro electric potential of the state is also being exploited to further the state's industrial development. 5 industrial estates have also boomed Dharmanagar, Kumarghat, Arundhutinagar, Dhwajanagar and Dhukli while three industrial centers have come up in Agartala, Udaipur and Kailashahar
