Shri Manik Sarkar, an inveterate politician currently hold office as the honorable Tripura Chief Minister. Shri. Sarkar was born on 22nd January, 1949 in South Tripura's Radhakishorepur. His political career is illustrious and can be traced as far back as his student days. He was one of the young and idealistic student leaders during the troubled 1960's when the riotous food movement in the year 1967, aimed against the then Congress government shook the entire state.
His pioneering role in the food movement and leadership abilities to induce the hoi polloi into the statewide movement eventually caught the notice of the Communist Party of India, Marxist i.e. The CPI (M). Very soon, in the year 1968, Manik Sarkar was inducted into the CPI (M). This was a milestone in the political career of Manik Sarkar, who was still a student of the state's leading academic institution, the M.B.B. College. After this, there was no looking back for Shri. Sarkar who was then elected as the General Secretary of M. B. B. College Student's Union as a candidate from the Student's Fedeartion of India(SFI). He also held the elite titles of the SFI State Committee Secretary and the Vice President of the all India Committee of SFI.
Along with politics, academics also continued for Manik Sarkar, a versatile politician. After acquired his degree in commerce in the year 1972, his political career soared further when he was elected as a member of the CPI (M) State Committee, followed by a stint in the party state Secretariat in 1978. After his election as an MLA in the year 1980, he was entrusted with the responsibility of the Left Front Chief Whip, the State Secretary of the CPI(M) and the State Left Front Convenor. He contested the elections from the Dhanpur Assembly Constituency from West Tripura's Sonamura Sub Division to be elected as the state's Chief Minsiter, the paramount administrative position of the Tripura Government.
