Tripura Legislative Assembly

The Tripura Legislative Assembly is a very important part of the administrative system of the state of Tripura. This assembly is an integral part of the government of Tripura after the declaration of the region as a state, though it came into existence before that time.

Till the month of October in the year 1949, Tripura was considered a princely state. The regency council was established for a brief time period prior to its freedom. This council was continued till the the month of October in the year 1949. After the state was declared a union territory in the month of November in 1956, a Territorial Council was established in 1957.

In the Territorial Council, two were chosen by the central government of India and 30 others were voted for by the common people. On the 1st of July in the year 1963, this Territorial Council was replaced by the Legislative Council in Tripura and the Council of Ministers. The members of the territorial Council were made the members of the Council of Ministers and the legislative council of Tripura.

Since the state of Tripura has been declared a state in the month of January in 1972, the legislative assembly at Tripura comprises of 60 members. The span of a particular assembly is 5 years. If necessary, an assembly can span for less than 5 years.

The current Tripura legislative council is the ninth assembly of the state. Generally, four sessions of the legislative council in Tripura are held in a year. The legislative assembly consists of 14 committees.

The Ujjayanta Palace is the place that is generally used for holding the meetings of the Tripura Legislative Council.
