Tripura Transport Department

The Tripura Transport Department, one of the core sectors in the infrastructure of the northeast Indian state plays a pivotal role in the development of the state's transport and communication facilities and also augments the other key areas like agriculture, economy and industries.

One of the principal Tripura Government Departments, the Tripura Transport Department, a public undertaking conforms to the provisions stated in the Right to Information Act,2005. The state level body, the transport department of the Tripura government houses many district as well as sub division level units under its wing. The main office is that of the Joint Transport Commissioner in West Tripura District as well as other transport offices in South Tripura, North Tripura and Dhalai districts while one branch office is located at Dharmanagar. Another unit has been set up at Churaibari gate in order to inspect the passing vehicles and the collection of toll taxes, etc.

Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC) is another public sector organization of the government of Tripura whose administration is officially spearheaded by the Honorable Transport Minister of the state. The jurisdiction of all the functions of the transport department is headed by the Commissioner and the Secretary of the department and assisted by a Joint Secretary, an Under Secretary as well as a Deputy Secretary and several Section officers. The following acts have been introduced by the state's transport department in order to regulate transport and communication in the state:
  • State Transport Authority and regional Transport Authority
  • Motor Vehicles Acts - and rules made there under.
  • Road Transport Corporation Act.
Besides making budgets, auditing, making road and vehicle permits, acquiring licenses and a host of other activities also fall under the scope of the transport department.
