There are a couple of important rivers in the State of Tripura and the Manu River is one of them. Along with the other rivers of the region, that is, Khowati, Muhuri, Haorah and Gomati, Manu helps to drain the district.
The rivers of the state of Tripura can be classified into two main types; these are the rivers that flow towards the north and those that flow towards the west. The Manu River is one of the north-flowing rivers of the place. The other north-flowing rivers of the state are Khowai, Juri, Doloiand and Langai.
The Manu River of Tripura has its origin in the mountainous region of the state. Its course runs through quite uneven surfaces including stiff clips and gorges. After running through these rough regions, River Manu of Tripura flows through a wide plain. In this plain, the speed of the river slows down and it has a winding course.
It finally moves towards the north into the plains of Sylhet. River Manu finally leaves the country of India and enters the neighboring country of Bangladesh through the district of Maulvibazar. In this region, the river meets another river called River Kushiyara.
One of the most important facts related to the Manu River is the fact that the Geological Survey of India is the proposed establishment of the Manu Earth Dam on the Manu River. The Geological Survey of India and the government of Tripura are involved in this project. This dam is to be built at the high-altitude stretches of the river. The main aim behind the construction of this dam is to facilitate irrigation and control excessive floods in the region.
