The Republic of India is home to many utility companies that are involved in generation and distribution of electric and other forms of power. At present, many foreign companies are also making substantial investments in the India utilities sector.
India Utilities: An overview
There are both private and state-owned (or government) utility companies in India. By March 2017, Indian utility companies are intending to grow their generation capacity to 313,572 MW. Till December 31, 2010, the capacity of Indian utility companies was 156,092 MW. The plan is to reduce peak-hour deficiencies. Power shortfalls are a major hindrance in the way of India's economic development. At present, the electric power of the whole country is mostly generated by coal. Hydro oriented electricity generation is limited in a few states. The ministers are also thinking about collaboration between the government and utility companies to ramp up generation.
The country has strategies to increase its electricity generation capacity to almost three times. By 2020, the target is reaching 450 GW from the present capacity of 160 GW, which suggests an annual increment of about 23 GW in the coming 10 years.
