Agriculture
Agriculture is one of the prime sources of livelihood of the rural population of the state. The fertile soil of the state, increased use of fertilizers, better irrigation facilities, and usage of different varieties of high yielding seeds make it one of the major producers of food grains. The major agricultural cultivation is wheat, rice, pulses, oil seeds, sugarcane, apples, mangoes etc.
Industries
The major industries contributing to Uttar Pradesh economy are industries based on minerals, cement manufacturing, and small scale units.
Industries based on minerals
The region has a large reserve of minerals and has seen the growth of several industries based on minerals. There are aluminium units in Banda and Sonbhadra area, copper plants in Pithora Garh, Almora Chamoli and Tehri Garhwal, coal reserves in the Singrauli and limestone deposits in Mirzapur area of the state.
Small Scale Industries
Handloom and the handicrafts units are a growing industrial area of the state, with the state reporting 60% of the overall exports of handicraft products. The major products are the embroidered textiles as Chikan embroidery, Zari embroidery, and silk sarees. Agra and Kanpur are the major centres producing leather goods. The state accounts for almost 15% of the over all production of fabric of the country.
Services
The state is becoming increasingly popular after Karnataka as the IT Hub of the northern part of India. The cities of Noida, Ghaziabad, and Lucknow are growing as a popular destination for the growth of industries in the information technology sector. The Biotechnology division is also an important area that has witnessed expansion with the first Human DNA Bank being set up in the state's Biotech Park in Lucknow city. Another project proposed to develop science in the state is a Discovery Park funded by the Science and Technology Ministry in Amethi.
