Uttar Pradesh Government or the Government of Uttar Pradesh is a democratically elected authority where the governor serves as the constitutional head. Like all other states in India, the Government of Uttar Pradesh comprises three divisions - the executive, judiciary, and administrative. The legislative assembly polls are held in the state after every five years.
Governor of Uttar Pradesh
The Governor of Uttar Pradesh is appointed by the President of India for a term of five years. He conducts the swearing in of the Chief Minister of the state and his council of ministers. Despite the fact that the Governor of UP is the constitutional head of the state, the every day operation of the government is supervised by the Chief Minister of the state who gets assistance from his council of ministers. A significant extent of legal authority is vested in the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. At present, the honorable governor of the state is Shri B.L. Joshi.
Administrative divisions of Uttar Pradesh
The state of Uttar Pradesh in India consists of 70 administrative districts which are categorized into 17 divisions.
Legislature in Uttar Pradesh
The state is just one of the six states in India, which features a bicameral nature of legislature. There are two houses in the legislative system of the state and they are the Legislative Assembly or Vidhan Sabha (lower house) and the Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad).
Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly or Vidhan Sabha
Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha is the lower house of the legislature of the state. The residents of the state elect the members of the Vidhan Sabha by franchising their voting rights in the assembly polls held in the state every five years. The government of the state is created by the elected legislators. The term of an elected government is five years. However, if the ruling government faces a no confidence motion in the house and loses the majority as a result of that, a mid-term or premature poll might be required. The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly houses 404 seats or constituencies.
Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council)
This is the upper house of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. UP Vidhan Parishad contains 108 seats in all.
The representatives of both houses help in formulating rules and regulations that are promulgated by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
Political Scenario of Uttar Pradesh
The politics of the state is controlled by the regional parties of the state. The major regional parties include Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP). Presently, the state is ruled by the BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) and the Chief Minister of the state is Ms. Mayawati. National level political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) also play a crucial role in the politics of the state.
Ministry of Uttar Pradesh
The Governor of Uttar Pradesh functions as the constitutional head of the state. The daily operations of the government are handled by the Chief Minister and his council of ministers. The Chief Minister of the state enjoys a significant extent of legislative and administrative authority to rule the state.
The secretary to the Governor of UP leads the Secretariat. He also helps in the functioning of the group of ministers.
The council of ministers comprises cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, and ministers of state. The Chief Secretary helps the chief minister as well, who serves as the administrative chief of the state.
Executive
District magistrates are employed as the uppermost bureaucrats to oversee every district in the state. The deputy commissioner or the district magistrate gets help from a group of officials who are a part of Uttar Pradesh Civil Service and other state departments.
Judiciary of Uttar Pradesh Government
The apex court in the state of UP is the Allahabad High Court. There is a bench of the Allahabad High Court in Lucknow. In addition, there are district courts in each and every district of the state along with a few Tehsil areas. The sanctioned judge strength of the court is 160.
Allahabad High Court
The Allahabad High Court or the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad is the apex court in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. The court has complete legal authority over the state since 1950. The Allahabad High Court is one of the oldest high courts to be set up in the country.
The current Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court is Honorable Shri Justice Syed Rafat Alam. He took over as Chief Justice of the court on August 5, 2011.
