Uttarakhand Colleges

Uttarakhand colleges are an important attribute to the long tradition of quality education in the state. The colleges of Uttarakhand present a mix of degree colleges, law colleges, medical colleges and engineering and technical colleges. There have also been a number of management and mass communication colleges that have have come up in the recent times, to satisfy the demands of many students. The government and government aided colleges fall under the jurisdiction of the Directorate of Higher Education of Uttarakhand.

Degree Colleges of Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand colleges are 65 in number, which is quite staggering, considering the extremely hilly and rocky terrain of the state. Many areas of the state are absolutely unapproachable. Yet the endeavor of the government to popularize higher education in the state have led to a marked development in the infra-structural facilities of the state's colleges. During the formation of the state after its cessation from Uttar Pradesh, there were 34 government and 14 law colleges in Uttarakhand. Of them, Garhwal had 28 colleges and Kumaon had the other 20 colleges. They were affiliated to the universities at Garhwal and Kumaon respectively. After the creation of Uttarakhand, the government was prompt to improve the condition of higher education. The formation of 15 new government colleges, with three in Kumaon and 12 in Garhwal attest to this improvement. With its wide network of government and government aided colleges, Uttarakhand colleges are an extremely effective educational nexus.

Technical, Law and Professional Colleges of Uttarakhand

The technical and engineering colleges in Uttarakhand are the pride of the nation. Many towns have prestigious engineering and technical colleges, headed by the Indian Institute of Technology at Roorkee, one of the earliest in the entire country. The towns of Dehradun, Nainital, Almora and Mussorie have some of the best technical and engineering colleges in the state. That, along with the law and medical colleges form an important part of Uttarakhand colleges. However, the many upcoming management and mass communication colleges at Uttarakhand are also important additions to the state's higher education system.
