Major Hills

Uttarakhand is a state of immense natural beauty, boasting some major hills that contribute much to rendering tourism, the source of revenue in the state. The northern areas comprise part of the Greater Himalayan ranges, shrouded by lofty Himalayan peaks and glaciers, whereas the lower foothills were thickly forested till deforested by British log traders and forest contractors in the post independence period. The major hills are regularly visited by tourists from all over the country.

The following are some of the major hills of the state:

  • Mussoorie: Called the Queen of Hills, this charming hill station is 2003 meters high in the Garhwal hills. It is an excellent holiday option for those seeking a breather from the hot sultry climate of the plains. Besides, major Hindu pilgrimage spots like Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Haridwar, Rishikesh are within close proximity of this place

  • Mukuteshwar: 52 kilometers from Nainital, Mukteshwar stands over a high ridge and serves as a Himalayan resort, fenced by fruit orchards and dense coniferous jungles, it provides a wondrous view of the Himalayas and the Almora town below on clear moonlit nights.

  • Pithoragarh: The famous hill station Pithoragarh is in Uttarakhand draws numerous tourists for its scenic beauty and adventure sports options, such as white river rafting, hang-gliding and skiing. Pithoragarh is located at 1,851 meters in a valley, nicknamed 'Little Kashmir'. The district extends over 8,856 square kilometers and adjoins both Nepal and Tibet.

  • Lansdowne: Lansdowne, at a height of 1,706 meters, is about 81 kilometers from Pauri and one of the most peaceful hill stations in the country. It is a delightful hill resort surrounded by dense oak and pine forests. The places worth visiting are Tip-n-Top, Santoshi Mata Temple, Church Point, etc. You can also undertake excursions to Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple, Bhairav Garhi temple, etc. ‘Shardotsav’ is a major event at this hill station in autumn.

    Nainital, Bhimtal, Almora are some of the other major hills that draw tourists regularly to Uttarakhand during their vacations.
