Assembly constituencies of Uttarakhand cover a wide demographic and geographic range from the mountainous regions of Tehri to the foothills of Roorkee. There are 70 assembly constituencies in Uttarakhand. The Assembly elections in February of 2007 saw many national and state level political parties vigorously contesting in the 70 assembly constituencies in Uttarakhand.
The assembly elections of 2002, the first of the assembly elections at Uttarakhand was won by the INC. However the story was quite different in Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) which was the only party to nominate candidates for all the 70 assembly constituencies at Uttarakhand. BJP was a close second with 62 candidates. The elections were held on 21 February and the results were declared on 27 February following the counting on the same day. The state experienced a prominent anti-incumbency flow as BJP won the day by pocketing 34 assembly constituencies. INC came a close second with wins in 21 assembly constituencies. The BSP performed well below expectations, almost a repetitions of its poor Lok Sabha performances three years back when they failed to win a single seat from the state. It ended up with eight seats to its credit.
The state level parties also failed to perform up to its potential. Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) was the most successful of the state parties winning at three Uttarakhand assembly constituencies including Deoprayag and Dwarahat. Three other constituencies were won by independent candidates. The UKD went on to form alliances with BJP to form the government, since BJP was one short of the single absolute majority. The election of Bajpur was postponed and was held on 25 March.
