At present, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand is Major General (Retired) B.C. Khanduri, AVSM. He is the sixth chief minister of the state since he took over from Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Sunday, September 11, 2011. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and this is his second term as Chief Minister of the state.

Bhuwan Chand Khanduri was born on October 1, 1934. He hails from Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

Army career of B.C. Khanduri
From 1954 to 1990, Mr. Khanduri worked in Corps of Engineers, Indian Army. Mr. Khanduri received the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 1982. He achieved this award from the President of India for notable contributions to the Indian Army. The different positions that he occupied during his tenure with the Indian Army are as follows:

Political career of B.C. Khanduri
Following his retirement from the army career, Mr. Khanduri made his entry into mainstream politics. He was elected to the Parliament from the Garhwal Parliamentary Constituency in the then Uttar Pradesh in 1991. He also emerged victorious from the same constituency in the elections that took place later.
Mr. Khanduri was given the portfolio of the Minister of State (independent charge) for Road Transport and Highways in the NDA Government led by Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Shri Khanduri remained in the position of the minister of state from 2000 to 2003. He was promoted to Cabinet Minister in 2003 and retained the position till 2004 when the BJP had to give way to the Indian National Congress in the General Elections.
As the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Khanduri executed the high-status National Highways Development Plan of the NDA with competence and swiftness.
He is a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has been a member of the different committees of the Lok Sabha.

Social and public welfare activities of Mr. Khanduri
From 1990-1993, Shri Khanduri was the sponsor of Parvatiya Sanskriti Parishad in Dehradun. He also had overseen "Chandra Ballabh Trust", which is an Academic Trust in Garhwal and was initiated by his grandfather in 1917. He is also the chairperson and member of the following organizations:

Chief Ministerial career of Mr. Khanduri
Mr. Khanduri had a key role in the Bharatiya Janata Party's victory in the assembly polls, which took place in 2007. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state. T.P.S. Rawat, the man who finished second to him in the General Elections held in 2004, quit from the Dhumakot assembly constituency seat with hopes for Khanduri to fight this assembly constituency. As a result, Rawat was fielded as a candidate of the BJP to go for the Garhwal Parliamentary Constituency, which is Khanduri's stronghold and he won it in 2008. Previously, Rajendra Singh Bhandari, who won the assembly elections as an independent, vacated his seat for Khanduri.
Achievements of Mr. Khanduri as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand
One of the primary achievements of Khanduri as Chief Minister of the state is the reduction of outlay by cutting down safety measures to bureaucrats and political leaders, lowering their stipend for international tours and regulating the utilization of the special fund of Chief Minister to just district magistrate-sanctioned schemes. After his success in the polls, he visited all except one districts of the state to analyze various problems of the inhabitants.
