Industries



Industries of Uttarakhand form the basis of the economic set up of Uttarakhand. The State Industrial Corporation of Uttarakhand has developed seven industrial estates; and thus it is helping the industries of Uttarakhand to develop further.

Industries in the perspective of today's world plays a large role in the consolidating the socio-economic rubric of a state. Previously, agriculture used to the basis of the economic set up, but after the Industrial Revolution, agriculture has taken a back-seat.

In this respect, industries in Uttarakhand are the means of resurgence in the economy of Uttarakhand. In fact, it is the industries that is helping the government of Uttarakhand to compete with the other States.

Uttarakhand, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, houses a lot of mineral resources which largely contribute towards the industrial development of the State. Some of the important minerals mined in Uttarakhand are:

  • Limestone
  • Rock Phosphate
  • Dolomite
  • Magnesite
  • Copper Greyphte
  • Soap Stone
  • Gypsum etc.
Some of the major industries in Uttarakhand are:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Cement plants
  • Pharmaceuticals

  • Food Processing etc.
It is noteworthy that despite of having a rugged terrain the industries of Uttarakhand have shown a tremendous development. Some of the factors that is supposed to have supported the growth of industries in this area are:

  • easy availability of raw materials
  • transport facility
  • availability of cheap labor
  • enterprising Government etc.
According to the statistics, there are 41,216 small-scale industries in Uttarakhand, with an investment of 305.50 crore worth of Indian currency. Moreover, there are as many as 191 large-scale industries providing employment to over 50,802 persons in Uttarakhand. But it is noteworthy that most of the industries are forest based industries. Thus, it can be said that the industries play a significant role in the economy of Uttarakhand.
