Legislature

Legislature in Uttarakhand is controlled by the State Legislative Assembly of Uttarakhand. The legislature of Uttarakhand is unicameral in nature which means that it is composed of only one legislative body. Uttarakhand legislature is one of the youngest in the country, the state being formed as late as in 2000. It is devoted towards a maintenance of the existing legislative structure and implement new laws and amend them as and when required. It is the very cornerstone of democracy in the state.

At present the Uttarakhand's legislature has a total strength of 71. That includes a nominated member from the Anglo Indian community of the state. The core of Uttarakhand legislature is formed by the governor Sri Sudershan Agarwal and speaker of the Vidhan Sabha, Sri Harbas Kapoor, who supervises the proceedings of the legislative assembly. The post of the Dy. Speaker remains vacant as of now. Shri Mahesh Chandra is the secretary of the legislative assembly.

Sri BC Khanduri is the chief minister of he state and is at the very center of legislature at Uttarakhand. Having won for BJP, which emerged as the single largest party in the 2007 Assembly elections, Sri BC Khanduri now looks after as many as 35 departments, which remains under his disposal, containing some extremely high-profile departments. Along with the minister of Parliamentary affairs Sri Prakash Pant, he guides a very able group of ministers and assembly members into forming an extremely efficient legislature. The leader of the opposition is Congressman Dr. Harak Singh Rawat. Having won for INC, he plays a very important role in Uttarakhand legislature.
