Parliamentary constituencies of Uttarakhand amount to 5 in number. They cover the largely mountainous terrains of Uttarakhand and the wide variety of ethnicities in Uttarakhand. The
parliamentary constituencies in Uttarakhand range from the breathtaking mountains of Garhwal to the foothills at Hardwar. The 5
parliamentary constituencies at Uttarakhand are as follows:
- 1.Tehri Garhwal
- 2.Almora
- 3.Nainital
- 4.Garhwal
- 5.Hardwar
Except for Hardwar all the
Uttarakhand parliamentary constituencies are of the general type. The 2004 Lok Sabha elections saw all major national parties contest in the five constituencies of Uttarkhand. BJP and INC contested in all the five constituencies, whereas BSP participated in three. The Uttarakhand Lok Sabha elections were conspicuous with the failure of BSP, even in the constituency of Hardwar, which was an allocated SC constituency. BJP won three of the five constituencies. INC and Samajwadi Party (SP) which emerged as the most successful state level party in Uttarakhand, shared one each of the two remaining seats.
Tehri Garhwal was closely contested by both BJP and INC, and saw Manabendra Shah of BJP clinch victory over Vijay Bahuguna of INC by a very narrow margin. Garhwal was the constituency of the reigning chief minister Sri BC Khanduri of BJP, who defeated Sei Tej Pal Singh Rawat of INC by over a margin of 10%. Almora was the third feather on BJP's cap when Bachi Singh Rawat defeated his closest contestant Renuka Rawat in a cut-throat competition. Nainital was the sole condolence for INC as KC Singh Baba defeated Vijay Bansal of BJP. The SC parliamentary constituency of Hardwar at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas was won by SP candidate Rajendra Kumar, defeating his rivals by a wide margin. It was the only success for a state based political party in Uttarakhand.
