British

The British had illegally taken possession of the Garhwal Kingdom with the advent of the 19th century that previously belonged to the Gurkhas who had claimed it in 1803. As a matter of fact the Garhwal empire was scraped out of the Tehri region and the British confined to the eastern fringe. Originally, Tehri is the name given to a city and a municipal committee located in Tehri Garhwal district which in turn is positioned in Uttarakhand.

The British also succeeded in spreading their authority and claim over the locales of Garhwal and Kumaon with reference to the Treaty of Saugali.

All these started with the British setting foot on Indian turf on 31st December, 1600 with the consent of Queen Elizabeth-I of England who had issued a royal charter addressing the East India Company. According to the inscriptions in that charter, she had bestowed the East India Company with the authority to carry out trade with the states that were positioned on the eastern fringe of the country.

The maiden ship laden with the influential British traders ushered into India in the year 1608 and docked at Surat, that falls under the premises of the modern day Gujarat. To gain favorable grounds in India, the British had successfully baffled the Portuguese battalion in the 'Battle of Swally' and compelled them to surrender.

This enactment of loyalty towards the Indians won the confidence and gratitude of the charismatic Mughal ruler, Jahangir. As a token of appreciation, Jahangir permitted the British traders to construct posts to assist them in explicating their trade and commerce.

Slowly but surely, the British began to vanquish more and more territorial dominions at an alarming rate. They established dominance over Bengal by defeating the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj Ud Daulah in the historic Battle of Plassey.

It were the British who proclaimed themselves as the undisputed monarchs of India. The British also had exercised authority over the state of Uttarakhand that was then included under the state marked as Uttar Pradesh.

India attained independence on 15th August, 1947 that also drove out the British from the various states including Uttarakhand.
