The Katuris ruled the district of Kumaon in the state of Uttarakhand in India for quite a long period of time. If you look for the early medieval history of Kumaon, you will get the details of the rulers of the Katuris. The Katuri kings were dominating the northern regions of the country from the 7th to the 11th century. They were very powerful rulers and ruled over the vast areas in Uttarakhand. The areas that came under the reign of the Katuris included the regions of Kumaon, Garhwal and western Nepal. This shows that the kingdom of Katuris was quite widespread.
The Katuris had their capital in the town of Baijnath near Almora. This is a place of exquisite natural beauty which made the people as well as the rulers inclined towards the world of creativity. Hence day by day the place grew to be the center of art and culture under the patronage of the Katuris.
The Katuris were very much inclined towards religion. They invested much of their resources in building of the numerous temples in their kingdom. The Katuris initiated a new architectural style by replacing the works of bricks with those of the hewn stone. They took the hazards of transporting large blocks of these stones over the hilly terrain. The Katuris used iron clamps to hold the blocks together. The magnificent pieces of creations of the days of the Katuris reminds one of the rich traditional heritage of the kingdom of the Katuris and of the country at large.
