Airports

Airports in Uttarakhand are the means of communication with the outside world. Uttarakhand has a rugged terrain, thus railways fail to be of optimum use to the tourists.

Todays world is all about competition and speed and there is no other means which serves the notion of 'speed' other than the airports.

The rugged and undulating topography of Uttarakhand hinder, in many instances, the smooth movement of the tourists in the different parts of the state. It has been found that the topography of Uttarakhand produces a lot of variations near the Himalayan foothills. Thus, sometimes traveling through railways becomes hazardous; at such places. Airlines seems to be more feasible and safe.

Some of the major airports that serve the needs of the different airlines in Uttarakhand are:

  • Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun Airport)
  • Chakrata Air Force Base, and
  • Pant Nagar Airport (Pantnagar Airport).

  • These airports in Uttarakhand are stationed at Dehradun and Pant Nagar respectively.

In fact, the airports, broadly speaking aviation, falls under the mission of the Uttarakhand government of strengthening the power sector of the state. Talking about aviation, the strategy of the ministry of Uttarakhand is:
    • To increase the stake of the state in the development of airports and also developing low-cost Air Bases.
    • Encouraging low-cost services through a proactive PSP structure, attractive incentives and risk sharing mechanism.
    • Facilitating the participation of the state government, airlines or aircraft operators, other private investors, etc.
Thus, we can see that the Uttarakhand government is taking adequate steps so that the future of airlines could be improved in Uttarakhand which would in turn enhance the tourism industry of Uttarakhand.
