Demography

Demography of Uttarakhand gives us an insight into the population distribution and growth of the state. It also indicates the rate by which temporary changes are recorded in the population due to birth, death, migration and aging.

As per the census conducted in the year 2001, the demography of Uttarakhand shows the total population is 84.89 lakhs which includes 43.26 lakhs males and 41.63 lakhs females. The male to female ratio is 1000 : 962. The density of the total population of Uttarakhand is 159 people in per square kilometer. The decennial growth rate of the population in Uttarakhand is 19.34%.

The demography of Uttarakhand also indicates that about 74% of the total population of Uttarakhand i.e. 63.10 lakhs reside in its rural areas. Out of these 12.56 lakhs belong to the Scheduled castes. This comes to around 83% of the total scheduled caste population in the state. The total scheduled tribes in the state add up to 2.56 lakhs and out of this 2.40 lakhs are rural.

Religion wise, Uttarakhand demography can be divided into Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains. There are other religions too but they do not have much follower in terms of population. Hindus have the largest majority in Uttarakhand's population. They are followed by Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains and other relgions.

The demography of Uttarakhand also states that out of the total population, 71.6% are literate. Literacy rate amongst the scheduled castes is 63.2% where as the same amongst the scheduled tribes is 63.2%. The Uttarakhand demography shows that the total work force in the state is 31.34 lakhs out of which 24.99 belong to rural Uttarakhand.

The demography of Uttarakhand shows that as per census of 2005 the total crude birth rate of the state is 20.9 per 1000 of the population while the total crude death rate is 7.4 per 1000 of population. The infant mortality rate in Uttarakhand is 42 per 1000 of live births. The average children per women is very high among the rural women in comparison to urban women. In rural areas it is 4.5 per female while the same in urban areas is 3.6 per female.
