Uttarakhand radio is a major medium for amusement in a place like Uttarakhand where the people of the rural and hilly areas barely get the facilities of modern media. Another factor behind the popularity of radio is its cost effectiveness.
The All India Radio is the oldest broadcasting organization of India. It has achieved a distinctive place in Uttarakhand because of the programs that it delivers. Radio in Uttarakhand is a prior amusement instrument for the people of the distant rural areas of Uttarakhand; thus it has a big responsibility to perform.
Keeping in mind the purpose of education and modernization, the All India Radio has taken a remarkable step in educating the rural mass. With the motive to teach English to the Uttarakhand school going students, the All India Radio at Uttarakhand Station has launched a 15 minute radio chunk for the students. The program naming We Learn English was started in Uttarkashi and Chamoli on 15 September 2004. The program broadcasts from Nakibabad station at 10.30 am. This program is successfully running as a part of the MCF activities which is coordinating in partnership with SBMA, Uttarakhand Government education department and Plan International.
Radio service of Uttarakhand has extended its coverage within the last couple of years. The Community Media Programs taken by the Ideosync is doing very well in working with the youth community radio groups in the hilly lands of Uttarakhand. This body is devoted in training the peasants about radio production technology and techniques including structural designing of the program contents.
Two community media centers have been established in Chamba and Bhanaj. Both of these community media centers are active radio production centers engaged in the low production cost though are well equipped with all the studio set ups including computerized radio editing softwares.
Thus, radio plays a major role in entertaining and educating the Uttarakhand people.
