Vizag, as Visakhapatnam is popularly called, derived its name from Visakha, the god of valor and war. It is said that the city was named Visakhapatnam by an Andhra ruler, who rested here on his way to Benaras, between the 9th and 11th century. Archaeological records, however, say that Visakhapatnam was built by Kulottunga of the Cholas between the 11th and 12th centuries.

The port city of Visakhapatnam lies within the co-ordinates of 17� 42� North Latitude and 83� 15� East Longitude. According to the census of 2001, the total population of Vizag is 969, 608. The literacy rate of Visakhapatnam is considerably higher than the national average of 59.5%. According to the census, the literacy rate is 69%. Telugu is the official language of Visakhapatnam, but other languages like Hindi and English are also spoken.

Visakhapatnam weather remains on the warmer side throughout the year. The summer months are generally hot while the winter months are pleasant. The months from February to May are the hottest with May recording the maximum temperature. Therefore, visiting Visakhapatnam during the winter months of December and January is advisable. Vizag falls in the path of the north-east monsoon. As it is located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, Visakhapatnam receives a substantial amount of rainfall. Also, thunderstorms are a common phenomenon during the monsoon months.

The Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam looks after the administration of the city. The corporation is headed by the Mayor, who is supported by the Deputy Mayor and the heads of the different departments.
