Hailing from the Palakkad district of Kerala, M. K. Narayanan married Padmini Narayanan. The couple has got a daughter named Meena and a son named as Vijay. Both of them are married.
Educational qualification of existing Governor of West Bengal
M. K. Narayanan completed his Master Degree level of studies in Economics from the Madras University. He had his primary schooling done from Delhi and Shimla. Narayanan is an alumnus of Chennai's Loyala College since he did his high school as well as university education from Chennai.
Career of Mr. M. K. Narayanan
After completing his post graduation, M. K. Narayanan joined I. P. S. (Indian Police Service) in the year 1955. He proved himself to be the best officer in the batch. Mr. M. K. Narayanan was initially appointed as the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Chennai. Later during the month of February in 1959, Mr. Narayanan was sent on deputation to the Indian Intelligence Bureau.
How was the later part of Mr. M.K Narayanan's career?
Narayanan was involved in different assignments regarding national and internal security of the Intelligence Bureau (I. B.). Mr. M. K. Narayanan served as the Director of the Indian Intelligence Bureau in between the years 1987 and 1992. Prior to his retirement in 1992, he even held the responsible position of Chairman of the India Government's Joint Intelligence Committee.
Even after his retirement, Narayanan was very much involved in the varied security matters. Mr. Narayanan has been a part of the Task Force, which was formed as per the report of the Kargil Committee in the year 2000. Being a member of numerous expert panels, Mr. M. K. Narayanan was often consulted on matters regarding counter intelligence and counter terrorism.
During May 2004, M. K. Narayanan was appointed as the Security Advisor to the contemporary Prime Minister of India. He took charge of the national security in the month of January, 2005. As a N. S. A. (National Security Advisor) to the Indian Prime Minister, he was responsible for advising on national security, internal intelligence and security, defence matters, foreign policies and space and nuclear matters. Besides being responsible for making the country lead in strategic dialogues and institutionalized security, Mr. Narayanan served as the Special Representative to the Indian Prime Minister for border discussion with China. However, Narayanan was hugely criticized during the terrorist attack in the city of Mumbai in 2008, which killed around 200 people. It was claimed by people that the chief threat to the security of the country was from Pakistan and Kashmir. According to them, had he not kept himself pre-occupied with the L. T. T. E. and Sri Lanka, Mumbai would not have experienced such a major terrorist attack. This made Mr. M. K. Narayanan decide to leave the position on 30th November, 2008 though Mr. Manmohan Singh, India's Prime Minister did not accept the resignation.
On 24th January 2010, Mr. M. K. Narayanan took charge of the office of the Governor of West Bengal from the earlier Governor of the state Mr. Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Being West Bengal's Governor, M. K. Narayanan is vested with discretionary, executive and legislative powers. His ex-officio role includes Chancellorship of the existing 14 universities of West Bengal as well as Chairmanship or Presidentship of numerous organizations like Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial Hall, Welfare Fund of the West Bengal Governor and many more.
