The West Bengal Legislative Assembly stands as the token of history and a representative of the democratic form of governance in the state of West Bengal. The legislative assembly of West Bengal comprises of the elected members. The laws of the state are enacted in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
The legislative assembly of West Bengal came into existence in the year 1935 under the Government of India Act. The act made provisions to add another house to the already existing legislative council. The assembly then consisted of 250 members. The legislative assembly of the state was elected for five years. The house would be dissolved earlier if the ruling party did not have a majority. With the division of Bengal into West Bengal and the erstwhile East Pakistan, the strength of the house was reduced to 90 members. The assembly has remained the constituent part of the legislature of West Bengal since then though the number of members of the assembly has increased.
The present strength of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly stand at 294 members. The house also has an elected member from the Anglo Indian community. The bills of the state are raised and debated in this house and after being passed, the bill becomes the act of the government. The house is presided over by the speaker and the deputy speaker who holds office in the absence of the speaker.
The West Bengal Legislative Assembly is situated in the capital city of Kolkata. It stands as the chief feature of the democratic government of West Bengal.
