The parliamentary constituencies of the state of West Bengal hold elections to elect members to the lower parliamentary house of the country or the Lok Sabha. There are 42 parliamentary constituencies in the state of West Bengal. Some of these constituencies include Darjeeling, Coochbehar, Malda, Murshidabad, Berhempore, Barrackpore, Jalpaiguri, Howrah, Burdwan, Birbhum, Bolpur, Asansol, Durgapur, Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura. The constituency of Kolkata is subdivided into Kolkata North East, Kolkata North West, Jadavpur, Dum Dum and South Kolkata constituencies. There are several constituencies which are reserved for the Schedules Castes and Scheduled Tribe candidates. Members elected from these constituencies belong to these categories.
The assembly constituencies of the state of West Bengal is divided into 294 seats. The elected members of these constituencies are representatives in the lower parliamentary house of the state or the Vidhan Sabha. The constituencies are divided according to the area. The party with the maximum number of votes among these assembly constituencies forms the government in the state. The elections are held in the different polling stations at an interval of five years.
The parliamentary constituencies and the assembly constituencies make up the state constituencies of the state of West Bengal. These electoral bodies are the most important constituents of the democratic system of the state.
