Alipur Zoo

Regarded as one of the oldest attractions of West Bengal, Alipur Zoo in Kolkata dates back to 1876. Inaugurated by Edward VII, the place better known as the Alipur Zoological Garden, boasts of being the first of its kind in Asia. At present the Zoo houses some of the rarest of rare species within its premises.

Administered according to the Bengal Public Parks Act, 1904, Alipur Zoo of West Bengal is regarded as one of the pioneers in the field of giraffe breeding. Presenting a sanctuary full of different types of animals and birds, the Zoo is famous for possessing many species which are near extinction today.

A tortoise all of 250 years which died recently used to be a prized possession of Alipur Zoo. White tiger is another special attraction which has become endangered specie at present. The Zoological Garden claims accolades for being initiating the cross-breeding process. Tigions and Litigons are the two exotic specimens of such unique breeding.

The wonders of Alipur Zoological Garden in West Bengal seem quite infinite. The exotic Manipur Brow Antlered Deer is one such enticing specie which is found in the Zoo. Among other features, the Zoological Garden has separate spaces for each and every animal. Be it a reptile, a mammal, a carnivore or a rare kind of bird, all of them have their own dwelling places in Alipur Zoo.

While touring the Zoo, on the one hand visitors can find herd of deer roaming in the bounded open area. While on the other hand, they can be thrilled to see the majestic royal Bengal tiger roaring infront of an artificial cave which is enclosed by elevated boundaries. There is a separate Zoo in the premises of the main Garden which is meant to amuse the kids only.

There are aquariums inside Alipur zoo where one can see colorful fish types. Also, almost all members of the serpent family can be found in the Zoo. Crocodiles kept in the specially built wetlands are yet another major attraction of the Zoological Garden.

Being a prime appeal of West Bengal, Alipur Zoo goes on entertaining young and old with equal ease.
