Farakka Barrage

Farakka Barrage, constructed over the Ganges river of West Bengal, plays a significant role in preventing the imminent effects of floods in the area. Built in 1974, the Barrage was erected for irrigation activities and to reroute the flow of the Ganges towards the Hooghly and Bhagirathi rivers.

Located in the state of West Bengal, Farakka Barrage symbolizes the excellent engineering endeavors of Shri Debesh Mukherjee who was believed to be the prime figure behind the formation of the dam.

Before the establishment of Farakka Barrage in West Bengal, rainy season was a matter of fear for the local people. This was due to the fact that floods used to damage the agricultural fields and surrounding villages, thereby resulting in large-scale devastation.

With a purpose to stop the emergence of such destructive floods every year, the then Chief Minster of West Bengal proposed a construction plan for the famous dam. At a distance of 314 km away from Kolkata, Farakka Barrage thus came into being.

Today, Farakka Barrage has transformed into one of the many attractions of West Bengal. The super thermal power station and a modern town near the Barrage have helped in adding some extra appeal.

Farakka Barrage of West Bengal is quite famous among the tourists for having an interesting past. The archeologists have stated that in the 15th and 16th centuries Farakka was a bustling dwelling place of the Mughal Emperors. The supporting evidences came up in the form of weapons, coins, statues and utensils all of which were found while excavation was going on.

People coming from various parts of India and abroad not only enjoy the surrounding serenity of Farakka Barrage but also can explore the adjoining island and a deer park.

Farakka Barrage, undoubtedly is a shining appeal of West Bengal.
