Mammootty Biography

The Mega Star of Malayalam cinema, Mammootty was born on September 7, 1953 as Muhammed Kutty at Chempu in Kottayam district of Kerala. A recipient of an incredible three National film awards for Best Actor, six State awards and six Filmfare awards in the best actor category, his first screen appearance was in Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971.

After receiving his education from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, he went on to study law at Ernakulam Government Law College. Nobody could predict the heights of popularity he would reach when his first film as an actor, Devalokam (World of Gods), was not released in theatres. Two people who played a major role in shaping his career were M. T. Vasudevan Nair and K. G. George. He rode into the limelight with the movie New Delhi and Oru CBI Diary Kurippu.

He starred in three sequels to Oru CBI Diary Kurippu: Jaagrutha in1989, Sethurama Iyer CBI in 2004 and Nerariyan C.B.I in 2005. His acting in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha catapulted him to the heights of fame and popularity. He acted in many movies directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. His splendid performance in Ambedkar, an English movie by Jabbar Patel, fetched him the National award for a third time. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998. Alongwith Malayalam movies, he has also acted in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. He followed the footsteps of the legendary actor Prem Nazir to complete 300 films as a hero in Malayalam.
