Mira Nair, an India-born, New York-based film director shot to fame when her debut feature film, Salaam Bombay won the Golden Camera award at the Cannes Film Festival and was also nominated for an Oscar. After studying sociology in
Delhi University, she left for the US with a scholarship to study at Harvard. At the start of her career, she directed four documentaries, one among which, India Cabaret won an award at the American Film Festival in 1986.
Her 1991 film Mississippi Masala won rave reviews. Her movie Monsoon Wedding in 2001, won the prestigious Golden Lion award at the Venice film festival. Her latest film, The Namesake, rolled out in 2006. It is adapted from Pulitzer prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri's award winning novel.
Her new movie will be the Johnny Depp-starrer Shantaram and Gangsta M.D., a remake of the Bollywood blockbuster, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.
