Raj Babbar is an actor of Indian film industry and political and social worker. He was born on 23rd June 1952 in Agra to Kaushal Kumar and Shobha Rani. He graduated from the National School of Drama in 1975. He has performed in many art movies and commercial movies. Some of his roles have a negative shade.
Raj Babbar started his film career with 'Sau Dina Saas Ke' opposite Reena Roy. B.R. Chopra's "Insaaf Ka Tarazu" was a turning point in his career, in which he performed a villainous role. He became the first choice in B.R. Chopra's films like Nikaah with Deepak Parashar and Salma Agha, and Aaj Ki Aawaz with Smita Patil. Some of his popular films are Umrao Jaan (1981), Prem Geet (1981), Nikaah (1982), Aaj Ki Awaaz (1984), Ek Chitthi Pyar Bhari (1985), Jhoothi (1985), Asmaan Se Ooncha (1989), Swarg Jaisaa Ghar (1991), Rudaali (1993), Itihaas (1997) and many more.
Raj Babbar married Nadira Babbar and had two children Arya Babbar and Juhi Babbar from Nadira Babbar. He later married late Smita Patil, the famous actress, who died after the birth of her son Prateek Babbar. Raj Babbar has acted in more than 150 films and performed in over 30 plays. He was honored 'Yash Bharti' by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
Raj Babbar entered politics by joining Samajwadi Party and was elected as the Member of Parliament of India for three times. From 1994 to 1999 he was a member of Rajya Sabha. He was re-elected in the 14th Lok Sabha elections for the second term in 2004. He was suspended from Samajwadi Party in 2006. Later he joined hands with the former Prime Minister of India V. P. Singh. He has been involved with organizations for prevention of AIDS, drug addiction and those working for handicapped and the mentally retarded.
