Raj Kapoor occupies a very high pedestal in the annals of Indian cinema. Born on December 14, 1924 in Peshawar in present-day Pakistan, he started acting in Hindi movies at the age of eleven, when he appeared in the 1935 film Inquilab. He made it to the big league when he played the hero's role in the movie Neel Kamal in1947. After establishing his own studio in 1948, his movie Aag was a superhit. Among many of his notable movies, mention may be made of Barsaat in 1949, Awaara in 1951, Shri 420 in 1955, and Sangam in 1964, Bobby in 1973. In Booby, his son Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia.
Raj Kapoor's movies struck a chord with the audience. He is sometimes referred to as " the Charlie Chaplin of Indian cinema". He made many movies with a patriotic theme. He is credited with introducing actors like Nimmi, Dimple Kapadia, Zeenat Aman and Mandakini.
He won many awards during his long career. In 1985, his movie Ram Teri Ganga Maili won him the best movie and best director award. He was nominated for the 1953 Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival for Awaara. In 1971, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, while in 1987, he won the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He died of asthma on June 2, 1988.
