Jagannath Pahadia Biography

Jagannath Pahadia is a senior Congress politician. He has been the Governor of Haryana and Bihar, a Union Minister, and the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

Background
He was born on 15 January 1932 in village Bhusawar in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. His father, an agriculturist by profession, was Shri Nathilal Pahadia and his mother was Smt Chanda Devi. Mr Pahadia , who also lists agriculture as his profession, has an MA and an LLB degree. He was educated at MSJ College Bharatpur and Maharaja College Jaipur. He then studied at the Law College Rajasthan University.

He is married to Smt Shanti Pahadia. They have two sons and five daughters.

Mr Pahadia has been very active in initiating movements against social evils and has worked for the betterment of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes. He has held the position of Treasurer of the Rajasthan Dalit Class League and is the member of All India Backward Classes Association and member of All India Prohibition Council.

Political career
As a Congress party worker he has been a member of the All India Congress Committee. In Rajasthan he has held the party positions of Convenor, Rajasthan Youth Congress and Provincial Returning Officer of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee.

He has been the member of the 2nd Lok Sabha from 1957 to 1962 as an Indian National Congress candidate. Subsequently he has been elected to the 4th (1967), 5th (1971), and 7th (1981) Lok Sabha. He has also served as a Rajya Sabha member.

In the seventies and the early eighties he served as Deputy Minister in the union government for short spells. He was Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Finance in 1970 and Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Ministry of Industries, and the Ministry of Labour. In 1980 he was made the Minister of State for the Ministry of Finance.

In 1980, he was appointed the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, a post he held till 14 July 1981. He has been elected to the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 12th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. In 2003 he was elected from Bayana constituency to the 12th Rajasthan legislative Assembly.

Governor
Mr Pahadia served as the Governor of Bihar from 3 March 1989 to 2 February 1990. From 27 July 27 2009 to 26 July 2014, he remained the Governor of Haryana .
