Tenzing Norgay Biography

The name of Tenzing Norgay has already been written in gold in the annals of mountaineering history. Born in May 1914, he, along with Edmund Hillary became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. Born in a peasant family in Nepal, he ran away to Kathmandu as a young boy and then came over to Darjeeling in West Bengal.

Prior to his ascent of the Mount Everest, Tenzing took part as a high-altitude porter in three British attempts to conquer Everest from the northern Tibetan side in the 1930s. He also spent time as a porter in expeditions to other mountains like Nanda Devi.

In 1952, he was a part of two Swiss expeditions to climb Everest from the southern Nepalese side, which were not successful. In 1953, he took part in John Hunt’s successful expedition, in which he and Hillary became the first to reach the summit.

Tenzing Norgay became the director of field training for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute(HMI) in Darjeeling and in 1978, founded a company, Tenzing Norgay Adventures that offers trekking in the Himalayas. He passed away in Darjeeling in 1986.
