Nearly 7,500 km long Indian coastline makes the country one of the largest peninsulas in the world. There are nine coastal Indian states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal which are home to all the 13 major ports of India.<\/p>\n

The state of Tamil Nadu, with three major ports, stands on top of the list of states with the maximum number of major ports in India. The three major ports in this state are Kamarajar Port, V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, and Chennai Port.<\/p>\n

Major ports in Tamil Nadu<\/h2>\n

1. Kamarajar Port Limited (formerly called Ennore Port)<\/h3>\n

Ennore Port, now formally renamed as Kamarajar Port<\/span><\/a> Limited, is the first major port in India which has been corporatised and registered as a company. The port has the capacity of 20 berths to handle a variety of bulk, liquid, automobile, and container cargo. It is an artificial port which is 24-hours operational irrespective of the weather conditions and a large backup land having an eco-friendly environment, advanced navigational facilities, well-organised logistics systems, and transport terminal.<\/p>\n

2. V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust (Tuticorin Port)<\/h3>\n

V. O. Chidambaranar Port<\/span><\/a> Trust formerly known as Tuticorin Port, located in Tamil Nadu, is an artificial deep-sea harbour and counted among the 13 major ports of India. It is the second-largest port in the state of Tamil Nadu and one of the largest container terminals in India after Chennai Port. The artificial port of Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) is functional in all types of weather conditions and receives a large volume of international traffic. The V. O. Chidambaranar Port is the best for maritime trade and pearl fishery on the Bay of Bengal. The port city of Thoothukudi is also called the Pearl City and is one of the delightful sea gateways of India from Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n

3. Chennai Port<\/h3>\n

Chennai Port<\/span><\/a> is one of the oldest and the second largest port in the country. This port, situated on the Coromandel Coast of India, manages a variety of cargo containers, automobiles, coal, fertilisers, and petroleum products. The Chennai Port terminals have access to lighthouses, intra-port connectivity, pipelines, and railway terminus.<\/p>\n
