India, which is well-known for its dairy products, is the largest producer of milk, second only to United States(in terms of cow milk). The country produces nearly 50 to 60 million tonnes of milk every year and currently contributes around 9.5 percent of the global milk production. India is also the largest consumer of milk in the world. The integrated co-operative system of milk collection, transportation, processing, and distribution is responsible for the large-scale production of milk in the country. In 2018-19, India produced a whopping 187,749 thousand tonnes of milk.<\/p>\n

Uttar Pradesh<\/span><\/a><\/span> has the highest buffalo population in the country and the second highest cattle population. The majority of rural population in the state is engaged in livestock and dairying. In 2016-2017 Uttar Pradesh produced 27,770 thousand tonnes of milk while in the year 2018-19, the state produced 30,519 thousand tonnes of milk. The state has been constantly trying to increase milk production, processing and marketing of milk\/milk products and developing infrastructure to promote the dairy industry within the state.<\/p>\n

Rajasthan is the second largest producer of milk in the country. In 2015-2016 the cattle milk production in Rajasthan<\/span><\/a><\/span> was 18,500 thousand tonnes which increased to 20,850 thousand tonnes in 2016-2017 and in the year 2018-2019, it produced 23,668 thousand tonnes of milk. Around 75% of the population of Rajasthan lives in rural areas. Of these, nearly half of the population is involved in dairying or cattle-rearing which ultimately makes this state second highest milk producing state in the country.<\/p>\n

The third state in terms of milk production is\u00a0 Madhya Pradesh<\/span><\/a><\/span> which stands at 15,911 tonnes as per the survey of 2018-2019.<\/p>\n
