Hazare states government has betrayed people

Activist Anna Hazare strongly criticized the government on Friday for "betraying the people" on Jan Lokpal and also stated that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not keep his word. He specified that the battle for Jan Lokpal was for two years and government was constantly betraying people. He also warned of going on an indefinite fast. Hazare also questioned why did prime minister write to them that the central government would set up Lokayukta in states when now the cabinet has given its nod to the decision of forming Jan Lokpal and Lokayukta in every state. Hazare stated, "We wanted Class 1, 2, 3 and 4 officers to be under its purview. The government agreed to it but now it says these officers will not be under Jan Lokpal. What is the meaning of the Jan Lokpal bill?" He also criticized the non-inclusion of CBI in the purview of the bill.

Ordinance on strong anti-rape laws gets cabinet's approval

The union cabinet gave its nod for an ordinance for enhanced punishment in cases of crimes against women, that includes sexual assault, acid attacks, voyeurism and trafficking, as recommended by the Justice J.S. Verma Committee. Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh stated that the government had recommended to President Pranab Mukherjee for the issuance of ordinance. He further added that the government is committed to enact a stringent law on crimes against women and is sticking to that resolution. As per Law Minister Ashwani Kumar the ordinance will have original provisions of the criminal law amendment bill as well as recommendations of Justice Verma panel. According to the sources a law will replace the ordinance in the budget session of parliament which is slated to begin in the second half of February.The criminal law amendment bill is at present being reviewed by the standing committee of home ministry. The ordinance pertains to crimes against women and the term of punishment for those committing heinous crime against women would be increased.

Diesel price to go up 40-50 paise a liter every month

Diesel prices will be increased by 40-50 paise a liter every month so that the fuel subsidy can be eliminated as per Oil Minister Veerappa Moily. Till further notice oil marketing companies (OMCs) can hike the price by 40-50 paise (per liter) every month. State-run refiners at present are selling diesel at a loss of Rs.10.80 per litre. On Jan 17 the government allowed OMCs to set diesel prices so that the government can reduce its budget-busting subsidy bill. OMCs on the very next day hiked the price by 45 paise per liter. Diesel currently costs Rs.47.65 in Delhi, Rs.51.51 in Kolkata, Rs.53.71 in Mumbai and Rs.50.68 in Chennai. Moily also stated that it had come to his notice that states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu ask their public transport fleet to refuel at petrol pumps instead of buying diesel from oil firms so as to curtail on the price difference. He said in place of that the state governments should slash high local sales tax or value added tax on diesel to reduce prices. The government will be charging bulk diesel consumers like defense, railways and state transport companies the market price -- almost Rs.10 a liter higher than the retail selling rate -- to curtail on an estimated Rs.12,907 crore in annual subsidy.

Davis Cup: Disappointing start by India, South Korea lead 2-0

India's Davis Cup campaign began on a disappointing note as Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan was thrashed in the first singles while Vijayant Malik, after a fight conceded the second due to severe cramps in his left leg resulting in South Korea to take a 2-0 lead in the Group I Asia/Oceania first round tie here on Friday. Ranjeet,India's No.1 player for the tie, was defeated 1-6, 0-6, 1-6 by the unranked Min-Hyeok Cho at the R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium in New Delhi. After a major upset in the first singles, Vijayant gave the home crowd something to be happy with his spirited performance against Suk-Young Jeong. In the third set, with the score at 4-6, 5-7, 0-2, he felt lot of pain in his left leg and collapsed on the court and gave away the match.

Vishwaroop' gets peaceful release and average response

 "Vishwaroop", the Hindi version of the controversial film "Vishwaroopam", released without any stir on Friday to a mild response. Though it is expected that the interest will pick up over the weekend.The movie, the original Tamil and Telugu version has been banned in Tamil Nadu, but it released without any trouble in Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan, while in Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai, security was tightened for the release over fear of protests. 24 Muslim organisations are reviewing "Vishwaroopam" and certain scenes of the film have been termed derogatory to the community. But this has generated interest in the movie in north India.

One single test can screen 13 types of cancer

A single blood test which involves minimal incision named onko-sure can screen 13 different types of cancers at the earliest stage of the disease as per B.R. Das, president (research and innovation) of SRL Diagnostics. It can screen cancers including lung, colon, rectum, ovary, liver and other cancers. He also advised that every person should go for this test once a year. He further added that there were a number of radiological and pathological tests for cancer diagnosis but very few cancer tests for screening. This test is indicative of the presence of protein fragments called FDPs (Fibrinogen Degradation Products), which happens when cancer cells disintegrate  their surroundings to facilitate cancer growth.The patient need to just give a blood sample and a single test costs Rs.2,400.
