Deadline for e-filing tax returns extended till October 31

The government has extended the deadline for e-filing of all Income Tax returns and audit reports till October 31, 2015. "The government has decided that across the country, all the returns of income and audit reports u/s 44AB which were due for e-filing by 30 September, 2015, may now be filed by 31 October, 2015," a finance ministry statement said.This has been done, the ministry said, "in order to avoid discrimination between taxpayers residing in different jurisdictions and to be fair to all", as date extension has been a matter of litigation in various high courts. ASUS partners Foxconn to make smartphones in India

Taiwanese tech major ASUS has said it has partnered with Foxconn to manufacture ASUS smartphones in Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. "In a strategic move to expand presence in India, ASUS will kick-start its manufacturing operations with Zenfone 2 Laser which will soon be followed by ZenFone Go," a company statement said. The company aims to manufacture 150,000 smartphones per month by the end of the current financial year, which will account for almost 80 percent of sales in India. Source: IANS

BJP 'vision document' for Bihar polls harps on development

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has released the BJP's 'vision document' for the Bihar assembly elections in the presence of two union ministers and senior party leaders. "Jaitley released the vision document a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in Banka," Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bhupender Yadav, who is in charge of the party affairs in Bihar, said. Government warns states not enabling ease of doing business

Describing World Bank's latest ease of doing business report as flawed as it uses inputs from Delhi and Mumbai, the union government cautioned states against underperforming on ease of doing business parameters."We will name and shame states that underperform on ease of doing business parameters," Industrial Policy and Promotion Secretary Amitabh Kant said at the release of a report here on "Ease of doing business", compiled by the PHD Chamber of Commerce. BJP MP compares Modi to Mahatma Gandhi

A day before the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, BJP MP Vijay Goel compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Father of the Nation. Goel, a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan, put up a poster in front of his official residence on Ashoka Road in which he glorified Modi as the "saint of Sabarmati". "De di duniya me pahchan nai, uncha kiya bhal, Sabarmati ke sant tune kar diya kamal (Gave a new identity in the world, increased prestige; Sabarmati's saint, you have done wonders)," read the poster that has a picture of the prime minister. Maruti Suzuki's September sales up 3.7 percent

Leading passenger automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki reported a 3.7 percent rise in its sales for last month. The company sold 113,759 units during the month under review from an off-take of 109,742 units in the corresponding month of 2014. The automobile manufacturer's sales during August had risen by 6.4 percent y-o-y to 117,864 units. Domestic sales during the month under review rose by 6.8 percent at 106,083 units from 99,290 units sold in September, 2014. Source: IANS

Mid-day meals to be tested by labs each month

Mid-day meals provided to students at schools will be tested each month by accredited laboratories to ensure nutritional standards and quality, an official release here said. The hot-cooked meal provided to children shall be evaluated and certified by the government food research laboratories or any laboratory accredited or recognised by law, the rules notified by the central government said. India gets 638 declarants for $580-mn black money

India's drive against black money to get back ill-gotten wealth stashed away by its citizens abroad has drawn responses from 638 declarants for total assets worth Rs.3,770 crore ($580 million), an official statement said. The amnesty scheme ended September 30. It called for a tax of 30 percent and an equal amount in penalty, that is to be paid before December 31. The compliance window opened on July 1. Source: IANS

SC asks Bharti's wife if she wants to resolve issues

The Supreme Court asked Lipika Mitra, the estranged wife of Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker and former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti whether she was inclined to join mediation to resolve all the issues with her husband. The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu issued notice, asking her to respond as it fixed the next date of hearing on October 5 at 10.30 a.m. Source: IANS

FA to continue backing Platini for FIFA chief

The England Football Association has insisted it will continue to back its continental parent body, UEFA's president Michel Platini's bid to become FIFA chief, despite his links to a corruption inquiry. Investigators are probing payments made to Platini by FIFA counterpart Sepp Blatter, bbc reported.The FA announced in July it was backing the Frenchman for the role and in a statement, it said: "We are still of that view. Cyclist Pinto in command at MTB Himalaya

Top Portuguese cyclist Luis Leao Pinto claimed a hat-trick of stage victories in both men's solo and overall categories at the MTB Himalaya here. After clinching victory on Day 1 -- after the race was flagged-off from the Ridge in Shimla to Gada-Kuffer -- the 36-year-old Pinto clinched wins in the next two stages as well on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, ahead of the rest day on Wednesday. Pinto, who won here two years back, completed Monday's second stage in four hours, 10 minutes and five seconds in the cross country, stage-based endurance race. ISRO to contest damages in Devas-Antrix deal

In a belated response, state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday said it would contest the damages an international arbitration court awarded to its commercial arm for cancelling a satellite contract in 2011 with a multimedia services provider. "The ICC award against Antrix in the Devas case is shocking. Antrix, with the support of Department of Space, is preparing to file in court its application for remedy," the space agency said in a statement here. The Netherlands-based International Criminal Court (ICC) tribunal recently awarded $672-million (Rs.4,434 crore) damages to Antrix Corporation for scrapping the $300-million deal with the city-based Devas Multimedia Ltd. 16 lakh trucks go off roads in Telangana, Andhra

About 16 lakh trucks went off the roads in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Thursday as part of the nationwide indefinite strike by the truckers to protest against the present toll system. Responding to the call given by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), truck operators' associations in both the Telugu states joined the strike, affecting the movement of goods. However, essential commodities like milk, vegetables and medicine have been kept off the purview of the strike. Movement of goods to Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur and other major towns was badly affected by the strike. AIMTC is demanding scrapping of toll system terming it a tool of harassment. It also rejected the government's offer for electronic toll system by December. The truckers' body is also demanding one-time payment of taxes besides simplification of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS).
