Edward Snowden's asylum request not accepted by India

India did not accept the asylum request of Edward Snowden, the US intelligence analyst who is now sheltered in Moscow’s airport.

He had sought asylum from 21 nations including India. The US wants him to be extradited and has revoked his passport. It wants him to be tried for passing out sensitive information.

The Ministry of External Affairs here stated that they received the asylum request from Snowden and did not find it rational enough to accept it. India had emerged as the fifth-most tracked nation by the US surveillance programme which was revealed by Snowden when he acted as a whistleblower and leaked the US spy programme.

Interestingly enough, the external affairs minister Salman Khurshid doesn’t consider this as snooping and stated that it was merely computerized analysis of calls and emails which has also helped nations to get information about terrorist attacks that may happen in a country.

As per reports, Snowden’s latest finds also reveal that snooping was done by the US on 38 embassies including India.

At Dumka in Jharkhand, five policemen lost their lives in a Naxal encounter.

The dead included a Superintendent of Police, Amarjit Balihar, who was the the SP of Pakur. He was along with the other constables when the Maoists attacked. Incidentally, Pakur is not a Maoist-infested zone like Dumka and the incident occurred on the border between the two districts.

Balihar had recently been elevated to serve as the SP of Pakur and hailed from state police cadre. CRPF have sent two companies immediately after the incident to Pakur.

Only 26 applications received by the RBI for bank licences

After the hype that there will be competition among as many as 100 or even more players for acquiring bank licences, what was actually received were only 26 applications after the last day of submission from both the public and private sector.

This led the Finance Minister to state that there will be no limit on the number of entities allowed for the operation of a bank.

The RBI was to issue only a certain amount of licences earlier and the top business houses were vying for the same. It is not known what deterred the players to come forward but it might be the strict regulations of the RBI. This could have been coupled with the apprehension that this would lead to more exposure of the business house in the eyes of RBI and may be the reason for such a mild response.

Virat Kohli will lead the Indian side in the tri-series between West Indies and Sri Lanka as M.S. Dhoni suffered an injury in the match against the West Indies and won’t be able to play in the series now.

The 24-year-old Kohli, who has won hearts with his prolific scoring, will now get a chance to show his leadership skills and would don the skipper’s cap against Sri Lanka. It is indeed going to be a tough job for him considering the fact that India has lost the opening match against the West Indies.
