02 November 2019 Current Events Jharkhand Assembly Elections to Start from November 30, Results on December 23

Assembly election dates for Jharkhand has been announced. The election will be held in five phases which will commence from November 30 and the results will be declared on December 23. On Friday, Chief Election Commissioner, Sunil Arora announced the dates for Jharkhand Assembly elections for 81 assembly seats. The first phase of the election will be held on November 30, the second will be held on December 7, third will held on December 12, fourth on December 16 and fifth, the last phase of polling will be held on December 20. At present, Jharkhand is ruled by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The proceeding term of the Jharkhand assembly election will end on January 5.


Nirbhaya Convicts can File for Mercy as Legal Options Exhausted

2012 Nirbhaya Gang Rape case is coming to closer. The authorities of Tihar Jail have informed the convicts that they have "exhausted all legal remedies". The only option remains is filing mercy petition against the death sentence. It is also mentioned in the notice that petition has to be filed within seven days before the President. The Director General of Tihar Jail, Sandeep Goel also said that if they don't hear from the convicts about the mercy petition, the trial court will be filled in and action will be taken accordingly. On the night of December 29, 2012, Jyoti Singh (also named as Nirbhaya by the Indian media), a 23 year old paramedic student was gang raped by six people inside a running bus in Delhi. One of the accused, Ram Singh hanged himself inside Tihar jail, another accused, a juvenile was given maximum sentence for three years and four other accused were convicted for lifetime.
