Earthquake in northeastern states

The northeastern states were jolted by a 5.1-magnitude quake at 12.08 am on October 3. The epicentre was in Assam's Sonitpur district which is at the border with Arunachal Pradesh as per the statement by the regional seismological center. Earthquake's effect was felt in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. No damage or casualty has been reported yet. India's northeastern region is the world's sixth major earthquake-prone belt.

India dismisses Pakistan's statements on Kashmir

India while exercising its right to reply has twice rejected Pakistan's claim regarding President Asif Ali Zardari's reference to Jammu and Kashmir in his address to the UN not being 'unwarranted'. Vinay Kumar, minister at the permanent mission of India stated Jammu & Kashmir has always been an integral part of India. He also opined that it was strange that comments are being made by a country who has illegally occupied parts of Kashmir and with their reference to the state it is evident that interference in the internal matters of India is intended. As a reaction to External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna's statement in his address to the UN that Kashmir was an integral part of India, Pakistan's Deputy Permanent Representative Raza Bashir Tarar said: "Let me also make absolutely clear that Jammu and Kashmir is neither an integral part of India nor has it ever been." He also said that Pakistan would extend its support to the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in peacefully choosing their destiny in conformance with the UN Security Council's resolutions.

Tata launches new Indica eV2 model

Automobile giant Tata Motors on Tuesday launched a new model of Tata Indica eV2 which will give a mileage of 25 km a litre. It is priced at Rs.4.01 lakh-to-Rs.4.87 lakh (ex-showroom). This car has the maximum fuel efficiency in its class and will have new features as well as exterior. It has CR4 common rail diesel engine with power displacement of 1,396 cc and 4,000 rotation per minute (RPM).In its exteriors the car will have new stylish head lamps, new front bumper, triple-step chrome tipped grille and sporty rear spoiler with integrated stop lamp. There are two new driving technologies such as auto-drive assist and clutch-to-start feature that enables maximum engine functionality and low wear and tear.

India requires foreign investment in industry: BJP

BJP though strongly opposing the FDI in multi-brand retail has called for foreign funds in other areas and said the atmosphere should be made conducive to industrial investment.Speaking at a function of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) at New Delhi, party president Nitin Gadkari said that the flow of foreign investment in the country has stopped and Indian industrialists were investing abroad. The country should be made friendly to capital investment in industry. Gadkari also added that FDI in various sectors should come to the country.The government companies were incurring losses in several sectors, and that the government should be making policies and not running businesses. He said he will support capitalism as more competition would prove beneficial for consumers. BJP favored modernization but not westernization.

India defeat South Africa but could not reach the semis

India's win over South Africa by one run in the final game of the Super Eight stage failed to ensure its berth in the semifinals of the World Twenty20 Championship due to Pakistan's superior run-rate.Pakistan and Australia were both on four points and India on two when the match started. Pakistan recorded a 32-run victory over Australia which improved their run-rate drastically and led to South Africa's elimination from the semis.As it had a better net-rate than Pakistan,Australia qualified for the semis. India after the match with South Africa also ended with four points, but they had to restrict South Africa to 121 or less to reach the semis after scoring 152 for six. South Africa lost the match by 1 run and ensured India was also out of the tournament by scoring 151 all out in 19.5 overs.

Pataudi Palace being prepared for Saif-Kareena wedding

Actor Saif Ali Khan's ancestral palace in Pataudi near Gurgaon which is now operating as the Neemrana Hotels, has bookings on hold as the hotel is being renovated and prepared for the actor's wedding to Kareena Kapoor on Oct 16. The room bookings are on hold till Oct 25. Saif's mother, Sharmila Tagore, has been visiting the mansion regularly since past one month. Saif's father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and his forefathers are buried in the palace compound.

Apple apologises for flaws in maps, asks customers to use Google Maps

Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook has conveyed his apology to the customers who had to cope up with the glaring errors in its new Maps service.What can be termed as an unusual move he asked its customers to use the rival services such as Google Inc's Maps instead. Apple had launched one of its own mapping service earlier this month after the launch of the iPhone 5 and roll out of iOS 6, which was much awaited update to its mobile software platform. The new Maps service - based on Dutch navigation equipment and digital map maker TomTom NV's data - has geographical flaws and missing information. It didn't have features that made Google Maps convenient like public transit directions, traffic data and street-view pictures.
