PM and RBI Governor Speak during Event Commemorating RBI's 80 years' of Existence

While delivering speech at a RBI function, commemorating 80 years of apex bank’s existence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the officials of RBI to chalk out a roadmap of 20 years to deepen financial inclusion. PM added that programme should be rolled out in phases with first phase target to be met by 2019. Modi stressed upon printing currency notes on Indian paper and achieve target under ‘Make in India’ campaign. Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan, during his speech at the same programme, reminded government about importance of banks’ financial stability and the push for infrastructure lending should not jeopardise the stability. Raman vouched for finding new sources to finance for infrastructural projects.

BJP's 2-days National Executive Meet with over 300 Party Members Begins

Bharatiya Janata Party’s first 2-days National Executive meet under the leadership of new National President Amit Shah has begun in Bengaluru. Sources say that the two key issues to be focused during the meet include strengthening party organisation in South India and fine-tuning political strategy of the party including taking on the opposition on contentious land acquisition ordinance. It is learnt that the meeting will also take stock of the programmes initiated in the last ten months by the Narendra Modi government. BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain lauded efforts of Amit Shah in enrolling around 10 crore members and making BJP largest party of the world.  

NITI Aayog Committee recommends Overhauling of Indian Railways in 7 Years to Enhance Efficiency for Competing Private Sector

Bibek Debroy, NITI Aayog member, led high level committee has recommended overhauling of Indian Railway in seven years’ period and make the national carrier a autonomous body. It also recommended government to restrict its role to policy framing only. Recommendations of the committee asked the government to divide railways in two independent entities, where one will be responsible for operating trains and another for infrastructure and tracks. Reports say that the recommendations were made to realign focus of the national carrier to its core activities so that its efficiency improves and in turn becomes efficient enough to compete with private sector.

ED Chargesheets 6 Accused in Rose valley Chit Fund Scam; Over Rs. 60,000 Crore Scam Suspected

Enforcement Directorate has filed chargesheet against 6 accused of Rose Valley Group, a group of companies accused of being involved in largest ever ponzi scam of India. Gautam Kundu, Chairman of Rose Valley Group, who has already being arrested for 10 days by ED on March 25 under Prevention of Money Laundering Act on charges of violating SEBI norms and mobilizing public money is also chargesheeted. Initial reports said that Rose Valley group amassed Rs. 15,000 crore from people of West Bengal, Maharashtra, Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Tripura. However, sources privy to the investigation say that the concerned chit fund group has duped over 1 lakh people, amassing more than Rs. 60,000 crore.

World No. 1 Saina Nehwal only Indian Shuttler to Reach the Quarters of Malaysia Open

World No. 1 Saina Nehwal is the only shuttler from India to make it to the quarterfinals of $500,000 Malaysia Open Super Series Premier as her compatriots - Parupalli Kashyap, HS Prannoy, and Kidambi Srikanth - crashed out of the tournament. Saina humiliated her Chinese opponent Xue Yao by defeating her in straight sets (21-13, 21-9) in just 30 minutes in second round. In the quarters, Saina will meet another Chinese Sun Yu, World No. 15, who defeated Malaysian Beiwen Zhang by 21-17, 20-22, 21-17. India’s ace women’s doubles partners Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa duo lost to Greysia Polii-Nitya Krishinda Maheswari of Indonesia  by 23-21, 8-21, 17-21.

India Welcomes Agreement Reached Between Iran and 6 World Powers on Tehran's Nuclear Programme

India has welcomed the agreement reached between Iran and P5+1 group countries on the contentious nuclear programme of Iran. In a statement, External Affairs Ministry said that the current understanding on the issue seems to be on the right direction towards its comprehensive settlement, scheduled to be negotiated by June 30. Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson of External Affairs Ministry, reiterated India’s stand on insisting peaceful resolution of Iran’s nuclear issue and respecting their right to use nuclear energy peacefully. Per available information, Iran has agreed curtailing its nuclear programme in lieu of lifting punishing sanctions by the West.  

Meru Cabs CEO Confirms Discussion with Alibaba; Deal Expected to Close by April-end

Siddhartha Pahwa, CEO of Meru Cabs, has confirmed report that his company is in talks with Alibaba. Though Siddhartha refused to divulge any further details, sources say that the renowned cab aggregator is looking at around $400 million valuation. More than 80 per cent stake of Meru Cabs is hold by India Value Fund or IVF and has infused more than Rs. 300 crore or $50 million in the company recently. Sources indicate that Alibaba may buy some of the existing stakes from IVF. The deal is expected to close within weeks, before Jack Ma revisits India during April-end.

Audi India Still Leads Luxury Car Market Segment During 2014-15 Fiscal; Mercedez-Benz Overtakes Audi During Jan-Mar Quarter

Report published today show that sales of Audi India has increased from 2013-14’s 10,126 units to 2014-15’s 11,292 units, an increase of 11.51 per cent. Head of Audi India, Joe King, has said that his company has secured leadership position in India’s luxury car market for two consecutive financial years even after having one major launch in the last financial year. He informed media that Audi India is going to launch ten models in the coming days. However, reports show that during 2015’s January-March quarter, Mercedes-Benz has overtaken Audi by selling 3,566 units over Audi’s 3,181 units.

Arvind Kejriwal to Lead Demonstration March to Parliament Against Land Acquisition on 22 April

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will hit the roads on 22 April to lead a demonstration of farmers, activists, and supporters to the Parliament, protesting against Union Government’s plan of reintroducing land acquisition ordinance. It is the first time AK will be leading a demonstration after becoming Chief Minister. Congress has also decided to organise public protest against the contentious amendments of Modi Government to the Land Acquisition Bill, passed by UPA2, through issuance of ordinance. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi will address the INC protest rally, scheduled to be organised three days before AAP’s protest march.

Rescue Operation of Indians from War-Torn Yemen Accelerates

With Gen (Retd) V.K. Singh (MoS for Overseas Indian Affairs) hoping to bring back over 500 Indians from Yemen today, second batch of 300 rescued Indians have been evacuated from Yemen by Indian Navy from Al Hodeidah port on INS Sumitra yesterday. They are expected to reach Africa’s Djibouti today afternoon. Government of India has also got permission to fly two Air India planes to Sana’a, Yemeni capital, for accelerating rescue operation. MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin told media that India has till now evacuated 700 Indians from Yemen and over 350 of them have already reached India.

India to Become Country with Maximum Number of Muslim Population by 2050

Report on religious profile predictions of Pew Research Center published at The Express Tribune says that Islam will be fastest growing religion in the world and India will have most number of Muslim population in the world by 2050, overtaking Indonesia. The research also predicted that in the coming four decades, Hindu population all over the world will increase from 1 billion to 1.4 billion by 2050, a growth rate of 34 per cent. Per the report, while Hindus will account for 14.9 per cent of world population, people without affiliating to any religion will be 13.2 per cent.
