Protests, roadblocks, no classes in Bengal over student's death

Students didn't go to  schools and colleges while traffic remained standstill in many parts  of West Bengal on Thursday as Left youth groups staged protests over the death of a student activist in police custody. The strike called by the Students Federation of India (SFI) affected the classes in the state.Sudipto Gupta, 24, an SFI activist's death in police custody on Tuesday sparked outrage in the state. People had a tough time due to the protests during the day as there were traffic snarls on major roads, particularly in Kolkata due to road blockades.Students of the Calcutta University staged a protest in front of the College Street campus, while blockades happened in the city's Shyambazar Five Point, Ultadanga, Moulali, Hazra, Jadavpur police station, Behala Chowrasta and Metiabruz crossings.Shops and commercial establishments were closed in south Kolkata's Tollygunge, Dhakuria and Garia areas where the Left Front had given a call for a 12-hour general strike. Gupta's death has led to protests across the country.

Lashkar warns J&K village council members, girls

With an aim to topple grassroot level democracy in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) on Thursday warned and asked village council members to resign from their elected posts.The LeT posters which issued a warning to the village members and asked the girls to follow strict "Islamic dress code" were found in Aharipal village, 50 km from Srinagar in south Kashmir's Pulwama district.The posters had the signature of Abdullah Mujahid who claimed to be the LeT commander for Jammu and Kashmir. The outfit threatened village panches and sarpanches of dire consequences if they did not submit their resignation. The posters written in Urdu also directed the girls to conform to a strict Islamic dress code. The LeT warning also directed the locals to desist from working for Indian agencies.Such threats by other guerrilla groups have appeared in the past in some villages. Among those girls were asked not to use mobile phones. A huge majority of villagers participated in the panchayat polls of 2011, which were held in Jammu and Kashmir after a period of 28 years.

Sensex falls 1.55 percent; bank, IT stocks crash

A benchmark index for Indian equities markets slumped 1.55 percent or 292 points on Thursday due to heavy selling in banking, information technology (IT) and capital goods stocks.Markets remained dull on weak foreign indications coupled with concerns over prospects of early general elections.The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), started in the red at 18,731.38 points, closed at 18,509.70 points, down 291.94 points or 1.55 percent from its previous day's close at 18,801.64 points.The Sensex fell to a low of 18,473.85 points in intra-day trade and touched a high of 18,733.62 points.The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also closed 1.73 percent or 98.15 points down at 5,574.75 points.The BSE bank index dipped down to 245.76 points, followed by IT index, down 169.64 points; metal index, down 155.09 points; capital goods index, down 148.42 points; and consumer durables index, down 146.32 points.Of the 30 Sensex scrips, only six were in the positive. They were Dr Reddys Lab, up 3.03 percent at Rs.1,890.40; Coal India, up 2.56 percent at Rs.310.20; Hindustan Unilever, up 1.68 percent at Rs.469.90; and Maruti Suzuki, up 1.06 percent at Rs.1,319.45.The major losers among 24 were Jindal Steel, down 4.32 percent at Rs.329.20; Tata Steel, down 3.97 percent at Rs.304.40; Sterlite Inds, down 3.09 percent at Rs.87.70; Infosys, down 2.74 percent at Rs.2,882.85; and Hero MotoCorp, down 2.67 percent at Rs.1,458.85.

'Dedh Ishqiya' shooting to be completed in a month

Sixty percent shooting for "Dedh Ishqiya" was over and the rest will be finished in a month's time, this was informed by the director Abhishek Chaubey. "Dedh Ishqiya" stars Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi as well as Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi who were there in the 'Ishqiya'. The movie has a rustic feel, but it is distinct from the original.He stated that the audience will be curious to watch Madhuri Dixit again. He was also confident that once the audience watched the promos and listened to the songs they would like the movie. 

Paes feels young at 39

After 23 years of Davis Cup tennis, Leander Paes still feels he is young enough to continue as the tricolour and the thought of representing India gives him all the motivation.The 39-year-old will be appearing for his 50th Davis Cup tie on Saturday. He himself was surprised to note this that he has reached this milestone as he still felt young at heart. He has a 48-22 win-loss Davis Cup record in singles and 39-10 in doubles. He spoke on this on the sidelines of the draw ceremony for the Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group I relegation play-off tie between India and Indonesia which starts in Bangalore on Friday. When he was asked to choose some of the highlights of his Davis Cup career, Paes mentioned  India's 3-2 win against the highly-rated France in a World Group quarterfinal tie in Frejus one of his most memorable moments.

2013 Audi R8 V10 Plus in India at Rs 2.05 crore

Just a few months after its 2013 R8 launch in the country, Audi has now launched the high-performance V10 Plus variant at Rs 2.05 crore, ex- showroom India. The car features 558PS/540Nm 5.2-litre V10 FSI engine from Lamborghini, and it can get from 0-100kmph in just 3.5 seconds. It has a 7-speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox. Audi also stated that the V10 Plus can reach a top speed of 317kmph. The V10 Plus has shed 50kg over the regular V10 trimmed by extensive use of carbon fibre. R8 V10 Plus similar to its lesser powered V10 but has a distinct set of alloys and a matt finish to its grill.
