Militants open fire in Assam, 6 killed, ten injured

Six persons were dead and ten were critically injured when terrorists believed to belong to Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) started firing on people who had assembled for gambling in Gendamari of Goalpara district in Assam. This village is situated on Assam and Meghalaya border. The persons who died were Amarendra Rabha, Bholanath Rabha, Puran Rabha, Jayanta Rabha, Lulu Rabha and Kalpanath Rabha. There were eight men who started firing at the gamblers. The atmosphere in this part of the state was tense since election to Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) is scheduled in November on 13th, 16th and 25th. The Rabhas are pleased with this but this has angered the other communities who want the villages where there is dominance of non-Rabha community dominated villages to be excluded from RHAC that is 382 out of 779 villages.

EC sends notice to Rahul Gandhi

A complaint was registered against the Gandhi scion, Rahul Gandhi, who is the Vice President of the Congress by the BJP with the Election Commissioner. The complaint says he attempted to provoke the communal hatred with his speech on October 24 at Indore. In his speech addressing the rally, Rahul Gandhi had said that agencies from Pakistan were trying to connect with the Muslim youth of Muzaffarnagar whose families got affected in the riots. The EC has sent him a notice which specifies why action will not be taken against him for violating the model code of conduct. To this his office has asked for a week’s time stating the reason that Rahul Gandhi was tied up with the festivities. It remains to be seen how this proceeds further as any action by the EC before the elections lined up at Delhi, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram will prove disastrous for the Congress.
